Watched this video 4 years ago how to make bow string for my home made bows for myself and my kid. Now 4 years later it shoved up as watched when i searched how to make bowstring for my next kids first bow. Great video. ps The bowstring made 4 years ago still works ;)

There will never be a bowyer like you mick. Miss you and your bow vids. Hope you are doin fine and your back didnt get worse. How about building lighter bows? Maybe Flatbows with stiff handles...Holmegaard and Mollegabet for example...

I’m halfway through buliding my shave horse. I began on your beginners bow project and had the same problem, couldn’t keep it still to save my life. This video is brilliant, along with all your bow related content. I’ve always wanted to try making bows and your greenwood project on my feed inspired me to try. I’ve also been heavilt depressed recently, going out looking for greenwood and building the horse has lifted my mood exponentially. Thanks for taking the time to post all of these lessons Mick. Appreciate it.

I just made my first functional bow with this method! I had one failure but the second attempt was able to launch an arrow! It’s not very accurate and I haven’t really tillered it, but the feeling of seeing that arrow fly out from a bow I made myself was otherworldly! Thanks for making this video, I can’t wait to learn more about all this!

@1:00 If I'm not mistaken, the blackthorn flowers before the leaves has formed, while the common hawthorn flowers afterwards, which you'd think should make it easy to tell them apart, rather than going by the month in which it flowers?

I’m back. (i wrote a comment four years ago.) I built your shave horse because I liked its organic build, no hardware, and efficient simplicity. If I would appreciate anyone doing a video on leg angles, i would appreciate one from you. My shave-horse replica leg angles were a complete crapshoot. I understand splay and rake. I somewhat grasp sightline by the many explanations on RUclips, but I’d appreciate less explanation and someone showing me sightline on a chair. (No more, “Turn the chair until one of the legs looks perpendicular. Then pretend your eye is a laser running through the leg under the seat. That is your sightline.” Whaaa??? Okay. So what?) Resultant angle??? WTH? I don’t want to see math formulas, I want to see each of these concepts applied right to a chair and its legs. Like a good novel, show me, don’t tell me. Your shave horse video us so practical, no fuss. You’d be the guy.

Mick, The tiller looked good at 22 inches. I would have stopped right there, instead of pushing the bow farther than it should have gone.

Any North American tribe would almost always have just two things to use in making their bows; a knife and a tomahawk. And that was all that was needed as many a young man was taught from his father/ grandfather.In today’s world, I think we make everything much more complicated than we have to.

Has anybody tried this with wood doweling from home depot? I wonder if it would be strong enough or if it has to be specific doweling for arrows.

I just started making bows, with simple tools, small shop space, with no assistance but the internet. The feeling of shooting my first successful build was indescribable.. I'm making more. Thanks :)

Relieved to see I am not alone in the clamping problem! I will keep working and hope my horse turns out as well as yours has. It seems all is possible, with a few sticks and planks.

Hi mick, Here’s a tip- Instead of Flemish twisting the loop, Just tie a bowline knot while making the loop to the correct size.A very simple knot that won’t let go!
